Open Educational Resources (OER)

Adopt OER

After you find and evaluate an OER resource you are ready to adopt! Adopting of OER works the same way as adopting a purchase course textbook. You will still complete bookstore adoptions, but you toggle the "OER" switch during the process. If your course has a print copy of the book available you can adopt the text as optional. Below is how an optional OER text would appear to a student.

Adapt/Remix OER

Remixing a resource means you can adapt, reorganize, and remake a resource to create something new. This is especially helpful when you would like to adapt the material to learners’ needs, localize content to make the material more accessible, or add revised data to keep your resource current and up to date while preserving the original. When you create a Remix you are essentially creating an editable copy. The original content remains intact, and you can now make changes to your own copy of the resource. (OER Commons, 2019)

There are many tools available for faculty to remix content, including the LMS Canvas. For help determining the best option for remixing your resource contact the library. Watch the video below for a short overview on remixing content using the free tool from LibreTexts.

Create OER

It's no secret - creating OER isn't for everyone! But the process can be very rewarding in the long run. See the resources below for an overview of creating original content. If you are ready to take the leap, contact the library.
