Basic Searching in OneSearch

OneSearch is your gateway to library resources at CVTC. Before you begin your search, notice your options for pre-filtering your results. “Full Text” is selected by default, so you should only see items that are fully accessible to you. “Peer Reviewed” narrows your results to those written and reviewed by experts. Using the date range filter, you can choose between “All time”, “Past 12 months”, “Past 5 years”, and “Past 10 years”. You can also access the “Advanced search” option.

To begin your search, enter your keywords in the search box. When you start to type your terms, you’ll notice “Popular Searches” which includes suggested keywords that can help limit or expand your search. You’ll also see “Publications”, which recommends specific resources whose titles contain your keywords. Clicking on one of these options will immediately perform the search. You can also hit the “Enter” key or click the magnifying glass icon to perform your search.

You’ll now see your search results. You'll also see a new filter option - “Source type” - which offers the most popular formats for your results, such as “Academic Journals”, which you may want to select if you are searching for scholarly materials.

You can sort your results by relevance or by date (starting with newest or oldest). You may see a publication suggestion, which may or may not be relevant to you. Depending on your keywords, you may also see a “Research Starter” which typically links to an encyclopedia page for a specific topic.

You will see up to 10 results initially. Click “Show more results” to access subsequent pages.

On each result, you can read a summary, view subjects, and see publication information such as date and author. You may also see availability information.

Also on each result, you will see an “Access options” menu and these options will vary depending on source type. For physical materials, click “Request this item” to place a hold via your MORE account. For eBooks, you may see the option to access now as an EPUB or PDF full text. For digital materials, you may see the option to access now as an online full text or PDF or request the item via interlibrary loan.

Clicking the flag icon will save the result to your account - however, this is only temporary. Clicking the dot menu displays the option to cite the result, add it to a project, share it, and download the record. To view the detailed record page, click the result or “View details”.
